On April 3, a precise breakthrough was achieved between -200mL air return crosscut and the main air return shaft at the upper orebody of Cukaru Peki Copper-Gold Mine, which is a critical path work for the project in 2024 and is a key milestone for connecting the -260mL air return shaft to the main ventilation system, thereby rapidly increasing production capacity, marking a significant stride toward achieving 2024 production targets.
The upper orebody contains approximately 40 mt of high-grade copper and gold reserves. The eastern systematic works of the orebody is within the lower andesite alteration zone, requiring substantial support works, while the western systematic works lies within the upper andesite zone, rich in UG water and developed water channels, at where the -200mL air return crosscut is located.
To solve the problem of water issues, the project’s engineers closely monitored hydrogeological changes and implemented targeted water control measures at major water-bearing fracture zones. Leveraging the support and excavation equipment of high power, the project applied a combination approach of long-distance and short-distance cover drilling by BOOMER 282 jumbo, conducting one long-distance cover drilling every five blasts and one short-distance cover drilling per blast to identify water points and channels in the upper andesite. Despite encountering up to five water points per drilling and a maximum water inflow exceeding 80 cubic meters per hole during long probe curtain drilling, JCHX promptly organized drilling shutdowns and valve closures and ensured rapid control of the groundwater, which kept the -200mL production nearly unaffected, and maintained productivity through swift production organization and scientific and precise management.
After several rounds of long-distance cover drilling and curtain grouting, along with precise re-measurements by surveyors, the project ultimately achieved this high-quality breakthrough.
